Fight, fight, fight!

There are two things Hazel truly loves in this world: softie (small
soft blankets) and her baba. Well, we got in our first fight today
because mommy took one of them away :(
You see, H has a mere TWO weeks to be off her beloved baba, at daycare
(she would have it until she's 16 if it were up to me!). So we began
the tough transition and it is going to be awful!

Wish us luck (we will definitely need it)!

Let's Dance!

Hbot has some new moves!

More! More! Singapore!

As a member of the Hawaii Ten Miler Team, I was selected to represent the US in the 17th Singapore Army Half Marathon held on 24 August in Singapore City. It was an amazing opportunity to check out a fabulous place, so naturally I was excited. However, I had to leave the little Monkey behind, and I was definitely not excited about that. But, as you can see from the two blog posts, her Auntie Didin (we all know her as Kristen) did an AWESOME job caring for H and I hardly think she missed me at all! I certainly missed her, though, and I looked at the blog every time I was anywhere near the internet. I definitely will be updating more often!

The trip was so much fun! I hope I can go back with Chris and Hazel sometime. It was a beautiful, new, and well-planned country, and the people were so nice. Our hosts, Quek and Raj, were awesome. They came to get us at the airport at 2am, transported us everywhere, arranged for water points during our training runs, took us to a ton of fabulous restaurants, and even shopped with me! They even knew the answer to every obscure question we had. I learned so much!

We were one of nine Foreign Armies represented at the race; others included New Zealand, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. This was the first year the US Army has competed in the Singapore Army Half Marathon and I made history as the first female to represent a Foreign Army at the event. It was totally creepy, though because some of the other teams took like a million pictures with me! I was so sick of smiling! I felt like a celebrity!

I lined up with some 75,000 participants that spanned the entire Esplanade Bridge for the first run across the newly completed Marina Barrage. I was right up front and with all of those people at my back I was totally freaked out about being stampeded like Mufasa! The Half Marathon began at the picturesque Marina Bay, and wound past famous landmarks, such as the Singapore Flyer, the Marina Bay Gardens, and over the Marina Barrage before ending at Padang Park. The field was very competitive and despite the Kenyan runners and choking humidity, I took 5th place overall with a time of 1:32.

The start of the race. Yeah, that's 75,000 people breathing down my neck! How's that for motivation?

The finish!

The three US runners!

The funkiest smell ever!

They promised it tasted better than it smelled--it did not!

Raj, our awesome host, and this frightening sign that was all over!

Shopping for presents at the market.

The Indian temple.

Everything was sooo tall!

The Singapore flyer.

The East Coast Park. Part of the race went by here.

At the beach.

Iced kachang-- this was a dessert! It was delicious!

Monkey on the beach!

Toots, SP and Auntie Didin know exactly ho to take my mind off my mommy being gone...the BEACH! I got to play in the sand, walk all around, chase SP and eat sand (my favorite)!!! I didn't get to go in the water because the waves were way too big, but I made up for it in the bath later kicking my feet and splashing all around! After the beach I relaxed with Auntie Mmmbop and Auntie Daniele, I even got to sit in the rocking chair!

Mommy gets in tomorrow morning and I'm SUPER EXCITED! We are going to the airport to pick her up and I can't wait :) In the meantime I am loving all the attention and not taking a nap today!

Beach bum!
Trying to eat some sand...or shells!
Pondering the meaning of  life...she is very advanced :)
Kicking back in the rocking chair, I'm such a big girl!

I MISS MY MOMMY!

cuddling with my daddy bear!
being a stinker!!!
following Khloe the food scavenger!
my buddy Khaki :)
chasing down the volleyball, Auntie Danielle and I kicked Auntie Mmmbop's butt!

While my mommy is making history in Singapore as the first female from a foreign army to run in the race, I am having sooooooooooooo much fun with my aunties, Toots and SP! I miss her a million and constantly say "ma ma ma ma" to make sure everyone knows it! So far I have played volleyball with Auntie Mmmbop and Auntie Danielle, spent a whole day playing with Auntie Didin and not going to school, chasing the dogs all over the yard, and snoozing with Toots! Auntie Didin took me to Jamba Juice for a snack and on the way home I got tired of slurping my yummy groovy guava smoothie through the straw and decided to chew through the bottom of my cup! When we got home, Auntie Didin found me covered in my smoothie and loving it (she even saved the evidence to show everyone)!

I miss you mommy and love you very much! Run fast!
p.s. bring us home some cool presents :)

Hazel's Honu Hideaway

We spent all day crafting the perfect sand fort/pool for Hazel. It was perfect, complete with guard towers and honu embellishments. Hazel helped dig the hole and had a blast. But once it was completed she realized it was really just a sand playpen and her focus switched to escape.

She succeeded.

Atomic Hazelbot

Hazel is a sick little girl today :( She woke up at four in the
morning and she was a little fireball. Of course I dragged her to the
doctor and made her even more miserable for four hours. Only to find
out it's a virus and we just have to wait it out. She's doing better
now and finally resting. Poor little monkey.

Biker chicks

Check out our hot new ride!

Kisses for Daddy

Returning home with tears welling in my eyes, I was greeted by an empty shoe rack and an eerily silent house. My emotion was exacerbated by Hazel's confused cries for "dadada!" It was definitely difficult to say goodbye again. I calmed her down by playing the "who's crying in here?" and "bouncing bot" games that Daddy invented. He is an amazing Daddy to our baby girl. He is so proud and so protective. He and Hazel formed an incredible bond while he was home-she even gave him kisses before he left.

After putting Hazel to bed, I pulled up these family pictures that we took at Puena Point, one of our favorite surf spots. From the sand on our toes to the smiles on our faces they exude the immense love that our little family shares. We are so lucky to have each other. Whether near or far, what we share distance doesn't diminish.

Leaving Home

I'm adding this from Atlanta on my way back to Iraq. I had a great time with Hazel and Kelly in Hawaii. Seeing Hazel was incredible. Over the two weeks, Hazel really warmed up to me and was asking for "Dada" often by the time I left. I couldn't believe how smart she is. It seemed like she was always curious and trying to understand the way the world works. Even over the 18 days, she seemed to learn all kinds of new skills. She was making fewer animal type noises, and more one syllable people noises. She learned how to make a kissy sound and she can answer the question, "What do doggies say?" It was amazing. The biggest mystery is what color Hazel's eyes are. We think they are green, hazel or gray; maybe Kelly can add a post and we can get some feedback. Whatever the color, they are beautiful.

I can't wait to come back again (Feb or Mar) and be back with Kelly and Hazel for good--and hopefully take Hazel to see the mainland!! Thanks for all the packages and emails. I can't wait to see everyone again.

The Life Aquatic

The adventures continue at the Honolulu Aquarium. Hazel learned all about how coral is alive, not to release aquarium fish into the wild, and why jelly fish sting. Her favorite part was banging on the tank and freaking out all of the fish. Her least favorite part was the GIANT fish that were the size of the Murphy the volkswagen! She was so scared of the tank that she started screaming! Honestly I was a tad frightened of them myself!

The Adventures of the Calway Clan

Chris contemplates life's mysteries (or how to remain upright) as he paddles out into Waimea Bay.

Look at the toofies!
Go Daddy Go!

Hazel wants to take the board out for a spin.

The trio of beach bums.

She's got dumps like a truck, truck, truck . . .
A faux hawk and a football . . . that's Daddy's girl.
Auntie KB arrived yesterday!

Pretty princess soap eater?

She sat just long enough for me to snap a pretty picture, then tore off the headband and proceeded to chomp down on a bar of soap. Apparently it tasted great because I had to wrestle it away from her. I guess washing her mouth out with soap will be more of a treat than a punishment. Crazy baby!

Pretty princess

Hazel crawled into the sink and "helped" me get ready to go out to dinner. Doesn't she look so pretty with the girly headband?
